Averill Creek Vineyard is a family run 40 acre winery , the largest estate grown vineyard and winery on Vancouver Island.
The winery produces numerous wines including Pinot Gris, Gewurtztraminer, Foch Cab, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cowichan Blackberry Dessert and new Charm L’ile. The Pinot Noir has become Averill Creek’s signature wine. One third of the 12-hectare (30-acre) vineyard is devoted to four Pinot Noir clones. Recently, Averill Creek Vineyards proprietor Andy Johnston hosted a rare vertical tasting of every Pinot Noir made at his Cowichan Valley winery between 2005 and 2012.
The winemaking facility was built with gravity flow in mind, allowing the wine to flow from one stage to the next in the winemaking process. This allows the varietals to retain the subtle characteristics without the need to pump. Everything is gravity-fed and pressed. They also do not use any American Oak and they only use use screw-caps on their bottles. Their facility includes a beautiful tasting room, dining room and commercial kitchen.
Averill’s beautiful tasting room and patio showcase the Cowichan Valley from their beautiful vantage point of Mt. Prevost. Although there is no restaurant facility onsite, they encourage patrons to bring a picnic and buy a bottle of wine and enjoy the view from the patio.
